Do iGaming Companies Take Much Inspiration from Console Gaming?

Online casino developers borrow ideas from major video game franchises to hold players’ attention. Some games have remained fundamentally the same: poker, blackjack, and roulette are largely unchanged from their origins centuries ago. But in other online games, storytelling, progression systems, social features, and cinematic presentation have been drawn from consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, and further back, Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast.

The change is easy to spot when comparing older slot titles with newer releases from companies like Pragmatic Play and NetEnt. The early online slots were basic: spinning reels and simple bonus rounds. Modern releases feel closer to console gaming, with detailed worlds and animated characters.

How console gaming changed player expectations

Consoles have shaped what players expect from gaming. Series like Red Dead Redemption and Forza Horizon helped push standards higher in visual design, exploration, sound, and immersion.

Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar Games is a good example. The game features a living open world with dynamic weather, realistic wildlife behaviour and character interactions, and long-form storytelling. Players are encouraged to spend time exploring rather than rushing through missions. Intricate details like horse bonding (explained in detail in many guides to the game), and random encounters with characters the player never expected to meet, help create emotional investment. Going much further back, the early 3D console games on Nintendo 64 and the first PlayStation laid the groundwork for open world exploration.

Forza Horizon and other open world racing games are a little different. Playground Games built its series around freedom, rewards, and social competition. The games feature large festival settings, changing seasons, licensed cars, online events, and a sense of progression.

These ideas are mirrored in how online casino studios approach retention. Some players now expect more than repetitive gameplay: they want atmosphere, progression, and features that feel more active.

    Pragmatic Play and game-style mechanics

Pragmatic Play’s slots often include mechanics that resemble reward systems found in console games. Games like Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush use multipliers, persistent bonuses, and visually busy effects designed to keep momentum.

The company uses recognisable themes and progression-based features. Big Bass Bonanza, for example, uses collect symbols and level-style upgrades that resemble arcade progression systems. The idea is that players will feel like they’re moving toward larger rewards instead of just spinning reels. Anybody gambling should remember that slots remain fundamentally about luck, and that doesn’t change with more advanced game design.

Crash games show a similar influence. Interest in titles like the Aviator game online for real money in South Africa  reflects how fast-paced, reaction-based gameplay has become popular among casino audiences. These games feel closer to competitive multiplayer experiences than traditional slots. Players monitor rising multipliers and make quick decisions, which mirrors the tension found in racing and survival games.

Pragmatic Play prioritises presentation: the sound effects, celebratory animations, and colorful interfaces are a lot more advanced than those of early-internet iGaming titles. Developers know modern players are used to polished experiences on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

    NetEnt and cinematic ideas

NetEnt helped set these standards years earlier. Gonzo’s Quest used avalanche mechanics that replaced standard reel spinning with falling symbols. The game featured a character-driven adventure theme centred on the search for El Dorado. That was to give players a sense of movement and narrative progression rather than isolated spins. The avalanche mechanic was influential in the industry.

The studio continued their more cinematic design with titles like Dead or Alive 2 and Jumanji, inspired by the film. Animated cutscenes, atmospheric music, and detailed environments helped these more modern iGaming titles stand apart from their ’90s predecessors.

Console gaming likely played a role in that evolution. Adventure games on consoles showed developers that players respond well to characters and world-building. Gonzo’s Quest may be more memorable because players connect with Gonzo as a personality instead of viewing the game as a collection of symbols.

NetEnt also recognized the importance of pacing. Console games, particularly open world RPGs, often balance quiet moments with bursts of faster gameplay. Online slots try to create a similar rhythm with escalating multipliers, expanding reels, and bonus events.

    Cross-platform design

Another influence on iGaming comes from mobile and cross-platform gaming. Microsoft have stepped up their efforts in delivering a seamless cross-platform experience, though games analyst George E Osborn said earlier this year that Xbox was left in a “confusing position” after the retirement of Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft’s gaming division. The company’s dream, according to Osborn, is to deliver a cross-platform subscription service. This focus reflects a broader industry trend toward games and services that run on console, PC, and mobile, which makes console?style, cross?device features easier for iGaming studios to copy and optimize for casino players.

Studios design games with this flexibility in mind. Interfaces are simplified without losing too much depth, and features like quick sessions, touch controls, and cloud-based syncing reflect patterns seen in mobile versions of console titles.
