What it is

Counter-Strike 2 is Valve's competitive first-person shooter, built around opposing teams completing objectives across Counter-Strike maps. Valve develops and publishes the game. It runs on Source 2 and combines the series' established multiplayer structure with revised lighting, dynamic smoke, updated audio and a different networking architecture.

Valve released Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023, as a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The supported desktop platforms are 64-bit Windows and Linux; macOS is not supported. The game is distributed through Steam, and its base version remains free to play.

The free download and Prime Status are distinct offerings. Most modes are accessible without buying Prime, but Premier matchmaking requires both Prime Status and profile level 10. Valve's Windows minimum specifications include Windows 10, 8 GB RAM and 85 GB of available storage. Linux has its own published requirements, including Ubuntu 20.04 and graphics hardware with current Vulkan drivers.

Story and setting

Counter-Strike 2 is structured around repeatable multiplayer scenarios rather than a story campaign or a named lead protagonist. Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists contest objectives, including planting or defusing a bomb and rescuing hostages. The setting is expressed through individual maps rather than a continuous narrative that players progress through and finish.

The environments combine familiar Counter-Strike layouts with Source 2 upgrades and complete rebuilds. Valve distinguishes upgraded maps, which receive newer lighting and physically based materials, from overhauled maps rebuilt using Source 2 tools. Nuke is an officially highlighted example of the upgraded approach. Materials, reflections and lighting change how these spaces look, while the maps remain the locations for objective-based matches. Community creators also have access to tools for building maps and other Workshop content.

Gameplay and modes

The official multiplayer lineup includes Premier, Competitive, Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, Retakes and Rush. Premier provides a numerical CS Rating and global and regional leaderboards. Its current map-selection process differs from its original pick-ban system: following the September 22, 2026, update, each team chooses two maps, and one of those four selections is randomly selected for the match.

Casual and Deathmatch provide alternatives to the main ranked formats. Valve's launch announcement specifically directed new players toward offline training and those modes before Competitive. Arms Race returned on February 6, 2024, with weapon progression leading toward a final knife kill rather than the standard bomb objective.

Retakes returned on October 22, 2025. Each round begins in a four-versus-three situation with the bomb already planted. Players choose a loadout card and then use their available equipment to defend the planted bomb or attempt a defuse.

Rush, introduced on September 22, 2026, is a queued three-versus-three mode. Teams advance through randomly selected battle arenas toward the opposing castle. Controlling the tower when the enemy team is eliminated, or when time expires, wins the round. A friends leaderboard tracks Rush wins.

Smoke grenades create volumetric clouds that respond to their surroundings, lighting, gunfire and explosions. Reloading also carries an ammunition cost: since March 18, 2026, replacing a magazine discards the ammunition remaining inside it. The September update added a separate stealth option, allowing players to hold the reload key for a slower, silent reload. Valve's sub-tick architecture records the timing of actions such as movement, shots and grenade throws.

Reception

Counter-Strike 2 has a PC critic Metascore of 82/100 on Metacritic, where the aggregate is categorized as generally favorable. Individual assessments include Shacknews at 90/100 and TechRadar Gaming at 80/100. Shacknews praised changes that improved the experience without replacing its foundations, while TechRadar highlighted the competitive shooting alongside the difficulty newcomers face.

Those reviews assess the builds available to their reviewers, not every subsequent update. That distinction matters for a game whose mode selection and mechanics have continued to change. Steam also explicitly states that reviews written before September 27, 2023, concern CS:GO, so the shared store page's older user reviews should not be treated as reviews of Counter-Strike 2 alone.

Post-launch updates and editions

Valve has expanded and revised the released game through updates. Alongside the return of Arms Race and Retakes, the October 2, 2024, Armory update introduced an item-acquisition system involving Armory Passes and credits, plus weapon collections, stickers and weapon charms. Valve also carried players' existing CS:GO inventories into Counter-Strike 2.

The March 18, 2026, Guns, Guides, and Games update changed more than ammunition handling. It enabled limited map guides during the first five rounds of each half in Competitive matches and improved joining friends in custom games. Players can host a Workshop map with Open Party enabled so friends can join, subject to the server's settings.

As of October 18, 2026, Valve's latest published update is dated October 14, 2026. It improved demo and replay controls, added a download progress bar, updated AUG reload animations and included Vulkan renderer stability improvements.

Counter-Strike 2 does not have a separately titled premium edition. The optional Prime Status Upgrade costs $14.99 in the United States and provides Prime matchmaking, ranking features and eligibility for weekly Care Packages. Prime is an account upgrade rather than a replacement game download, while Armory purchases are separate from access to the free base game.
