What it is: release and platforms
Roblox is an online gaming and creation platform developed and published by Roblox Corporation. It released on September 1, 2006. Rather than presenting one self-contained adventure, the service brings together games made by individual users and professional studios. Roblox calls these games experiences, and its catalogue includes obstacle courses, racing, simulations, role-playing, and other genres.
Roblox is available on Windows PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Meta Quest 2, and Meta Quest 3. Its platform expansion has continued long after the original release: the Meta Quest version reached full release on September 27, 2023, and PlayStation availability followed on October 10, 2023. A native PlayStation 5 application arrived on April 14, 2026, with Roblox reporting up to 30% faster loading times.
Story and setting
Roblox does not have one overarching campaign, fixed setting, or central protagonist. Its worlds and stories belong to the individual experiences that creators publish. Each user creates an avatar to represent them on the platform, with customization options covering different appearances and accessories. An avatar can resemble a human, robot, dragon, or another form rather than a prescribed story character.
The range of settings is visible in games highlighted by Roblox itself. Dandy’s World combines mascot horror with roguelike runs and collectible characters. NFL Universe Football offers arcade football using officially licensed NFL teams. Scary Shawarma Kiosk puts players on a night shift serving unusual customers while watching for anomalies. These are separate creator-made games, not chapters of a shared Roblox storyline, and their rules and progression differ.
Gameplay and modes
Playing Roblox means choosing an experience rather than selecting from a universal campaign or multiplayer menu. Some games support solo play, while others are designed around playing with friends, competition, or cooperation. Objectives, controls, player limits, and progression are determined by the experience’s developer. Roblox’s own platform documentation therefore uses both game and experience to describe the content players enter.
Cross-platform play lets users on supported devices play together. Roblox’s PlayStation documentation specifically describes playing with users on Xbox, mobile, desktop, and Meta Quest. PlayStation users can disable crossplay, which restricts their sessions to other PlayStation users. Availability still depends on whether an experience has been published for the relevant device category; console access does not mean every creator-made game supports console controls.
Creation is a separate component. Roblox Studio is a free Windows and Mac application for building and publishing games, and scripting uses Luau. Studio is distinct from the client used to play experiences.
Communication also has account requirements. Age checks are required to access chat. Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts became globally available on June 16, 2026, introducing age-based game catalogues and additional parental controls. Exact ages, settings, and available features can vary by region.
Reception
Roblox does not currently have a numerical Metacritic aggregate to report. Metacritic’s ROBLOX (Game Client) listing displays tbd and identifies one Xbox One critic review. That archived assessment, published by ICXM on January 28, 2016, carries a score of 10/100 and criticizes bugs and reduced features. It is an individual review of an early console version, not an aggregate assessment of today’s entire platform.
Age guidance also needs context because the catalogue changes continually. PEGI lists Roblox as Parental Guidance Recommended, explaining that user-generated content can be unpredictable and unsuitable for younger children. ESRB separately identifies a Teen rating with Diverse Content: Discretion Advised. These platform-level notices should not be treated as a guarantee that every available experience has identical content or suitability.
Post-launch updates and editions
Roblox develops through platform updates, additional device support, creator tools, and independently maintained experiences rather than one conventional sequence of expansion packs. Studio documentation states that games run on the latest Roblox engine. An individual experience’s new map, progression system, or paid pass is therefore separate from an update to Roblox itself.
Recent platform-wide events include The Hunt: Roblox 20, which ran from September 17 through September 28, 2026. It connected games representing different years of Roblox’s history through a hub and rewarded progress with virtual items. Roblox’s October 14, 2026 announcement also detailed the expansion of its Creator Showdown tournament series to Brazil, with five participating games.
The base platform remains free to join and play. Robux purchases can fund avatar items and in-game enhancements. No separate Deluxe or Ultimate game edition has been announced. Roblox Plus is instead an optional subscription introduced on April 30, 2026, at $4.99 USD per month. Eligible purchases receive a 10% discount, increasing to 20% from the third consecutive month. The basic subscription does not include a monthly Robux allowance; separate Plus bundles include recurring Robux.
The private-server benefit changed on September 24, 2026, to one free private server per supported game, replacing the original unlimited-server offer. At RDC on September 11, 2026, Roblox also announced Chrome browser play targeted for the end of 2026 and offline solo support targeted for mid-2027. Those are announced development targets, not features that should be assumed available throughout the current catalogue.

FAQ
01Is Roblox worth trying in 2026?
Roblox is free to join and play, so trying its creator-made games does not require an upfront purchase. Its suitability depends on the experiences selected, device support, and account restrictions rather than one shared campaign.
02How long does Roblox take to beat?
Roblox has no platform-wide campaign or completion time because it hosts separate creator-made games. Any ending, progression target, or estimated playtime depends on the experience.
03Does Roblox support co-op and crossplay?
Roblox supports crossplay between supported platforms, although PlayStation users can turn it off. Cooperative play is experience-specific rather than a universal Roblox mode.
04What is the best platform for Roblox?
Windows or Mac is the practical choice for players who also want to build games because Roblox Studio is available on those systems. For playing on a television, the native PS5 application offers Roblox-reported loading improvements, while mobile supports portable play.
05Are Roblox DLC and game passes worth buying?
There is no single platform-wide DLC package to recommend; creators can sell passes granting privileges within individual games. Check the specific pass’s benefits because a purchase for one experience is not a universal Roblox upgrade.
06What are the Roblox PC requirements?
The Windows client requires 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and DirectX 10 feature-level graphics support or higher. Roblox recommends a 1.6 GHz-or-faster processor, at least 1 GB RAM, 300 MB installation space, and a 4–8 Mb/s internet connection.
07How much does Roblox Plus cost, and does it include Robux?
Roblox Plus costs $4.99 USD per month, and the basic subscription does not include a monthly Robux allowance. Separate Plus 500, Plus 1000, and Plus 2000 bundles include recurring Robux.
08What should parents check before children play Roblox?
Review the child’s account type, available experiences, communication settings, and linked parental controls. Roblox requires an age check for chat, while Roblox Kids and Select accounts provide age-based access with regional differences.
