Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Story and setting

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a new chapter in Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series, published by Activision. Its campaign centers on a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea. Activision describes a young squad of South Korean soldiers fighting on the collapsing front lines, while Captain John Price wages a personal war from the shadows. Price’s off-book hunt and the invasion’s wider forces eventually collide, expanding the conflict beyond the peninsula.

The campaign follows Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad, as well as Price, described in official material as an operator-turned outlaw. The story spans 16 missions and reaches beyond Korea to Paris, New York, and Mumbai. Activision has also identified Las Almas and a global threat among the story’s elements. These are announced story details; the publisher has not disclosed every plot turn or the full cast of characters.

Gameplay and modes

Activision has confirmed three principal parts of the game: Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. The Campaign is a 16-mission narrative experience. Players who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased either the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition gained Campaign Early Access beginning October 16, 2026. That early-access period is now underway; the general launch date remains October 23.

Multiplayer has been shown and described through official Call of Duty announcements. Its announced launch offering includes 12 Core 6v6 maps, smaller Gunfight arenas, and large-scale Ground War experiences. Confirmed modes include returning options such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Search & Destroy, and Gun Game, alongside new modes including Inflation, Hijack, Counter Attack, and Combat Outpost. The Kill Block setting is a modular training facility whose layout changes between rounds. Activision has also highlighted refined movement, precision gunplay, weapon customization, and new Killstreaks. These are announced features, not assumptions about unshown mechanics.

DMZ is described by Activision as an extraction-shooter experience set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, a combat area shaped by the campaign’s aftermath. Its announced elements include persistent progression, exploration, AI forces, rival Operators, looting, crafting, objectives, and extraction. Players can deploy alone or in a squad. DMZ Early Access is scheduled to begin October 20 for players who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased an eligible edition. Beyond Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ, no additional major mode should be treated as confirmed unless Activision announces it.

Release and platforms

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. The officially listed platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Activision identifies Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox on PC as the PC storefronts. The game is not planned for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The Switch 2 version is being developed natively by Infinity Ward in partnership with Digital Legends.

The PC version is being developed with support from Beenox and Infinity Ward. Activision has announced PC-specific performance and graphics options, along with more than 800 customization options across areas including graphics, gameplay, input, and interface. The publisher has also announced support for DLSS 4.5 and expanded ray tracing on PC. These details concern the PC version; they do not establish identical technical features across consoles.

Activision has said the game will launch as a standalone purchase rather than being included with Game Pass on day one. Its October 15 announcement says Game Pass access is not planned until Holiday 2027. The publisher has announced Standard and Vault editions, but a US price has not been stated in the official edition information reviewed for this page. Digital Standard and Vault pre-orders have included early-access benefits; the Vault Edition is digital-only. Physical Standard editions have been announced for consoles, with physical copies not available for PC.

Development so far

Activision and Infinity Ward announced Modern Warfare 4 on May 28, 2026, alongside a reveal trailer, its October 23 release date, the initial platform list, and the premise of the Korean Peninsula invasion. The announcement also confirmed Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ, and described a current-generation focus. The game is led by Infinity Ward, with Beenox working on PC and Digital Legends partnering on the native Switch 2 version.

Subsequent official updates have filled in the game’s modes and launch plans. Activision presented DMZ in June, detailed Multiplayer systems and maps in August, and published a campaign trailer in September. A PC feature and technical overview followed on September 29. In October, the publisher confirmed DMZ Early Access for October 20 and Campaign Early Access for October 16. As of October 18, that campaign early-access period has begun, while the full release is still scheduled for October 23. No earlier official release date or superseded release window has been identified in the announcements cited here.
