God of War Laufey

Story and setting

God of War Laufey is a mainline God of War action-adventure developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It places Laufey, better known as Faye, at the center of the story. The adventure begins after her funeral, as Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter her ashes. Faye awakens in the Everywhen and discovers that the arrangements she made to protect her family are threatened. Her goal is to find a way home and save the people she loves.

The Everywhen is the afterlife of the gods and the place where magic originates and ultimately returns. Its inhabitants include gods and creatures from different mythologies, alongside beings native to the realm. Santa Monica Studio has revealed Sekhmet and Begtse among the gods Faye will encounter. The natural flow of magic has been disrupted, and understanding the Everywhen's hidden nature is part of her journey.

Faye will travel with Rue and Phranque. Rue is an enchanted ribbon guardian responsible for protecting the powerful sword Faye acquires. Phranque is a cosmic cube committed to defending the Everywhen and its creatures. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye, with Perlina Lau playing Rue and Jack Quaid playing Phranque.

Gameplay and confirmed features

PlayStation describes God of War Laufey as a single-player, story-driven action-adventure. Santa Monica Studio's stated approach combines the mobility and fluidity of the series' Greek-era combat with the close character relationships and world-building of its Norse adventures. Faye's fighting style emphasizes maintaining momentum between attacks and moving between ground and aerial combat.

Faye will wield a new sword after earning Rue's trust in the Everywhen. Her Jötnar magic also allows her to separate an enemy's soul from its body. She can then attack that soul directly or knock it into other opponents, creating additional opportunities for combinations of attacks. The studio has explained that the Everywhen amplifies her existing soul-related powers.

The September 28, 2026 gameplay update introduced the Serpent Bow. Fully pressing the aim trigger provides more precise aiming and allows Faye to charge a volley of up to five arrows. Targeted hits can impair an opponent's movement or attacks. A half press instead activates a more mobile hip-fire stance for close-range arrow clusters. Phranque can launch enemies into the air, where Faye can continue attacking them.

The bow supports different arrow types, including rapid-fire, explosive and multi-target options. Equippable Scales change its appearance and provide a unique perk, while unlockable skills expand its capabilities. Faye's armor offers different stats, perks and appearances. Other customizable equipment includes her sword's Blade and Catalysts, artifacts that channel the Everywhen's magic with different effects.

Release and platforms

God of War Laufey will release on February 16, 2027, for PlayStation 5. The Standard Edition will be available digitally and physically. PlayStation's official guidance also states that the adventure can be enjoyed independently, although God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök provide additional context for its world and characters.

US pricing is $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Standard Edition purchasers can buy a $10.00 Digital Deluxe Upgrade. The deluxe content includes the Dark Alchemy equipment set, an in-game resource pack, a digital mini artbook and the digital soundtrack.

Pre-orders opened on September 29, 2026. Purchasing either edition before launch includes the Last Wish Armor Set, Phranque's Golden Leaves Appearance and an in-game resource pack. The physical Standard Edition's pre-order extras are delivered through a download code requiring an internet connection and a PlayStation account. In-game items are unlocked through story progression.

A separate $149.99 Collector Box will also release on February 16, 2027. It contains a light-up Faye statue, a 51-card Oracle Deck and a physical mini artbook, but no game. It is a limited-quantity PlayStation Direct product rather than a substitute for purchasing either game edition.

Development and announcements so far

Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War Laufey during PlayStation's June 2, 2026 State of Play. The announcement included an extended gameplay presentation and official details about Faye, her companions, the Everywhen and her soul-manipulation abilities. The accompanying developer material identified Ariel Lawrence as game director and featured an interview with Lawrence and Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog.

PlayStation announced a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 9, 2026, bringing the developers and principal cast together to discuss the characters, development and performance capture. The panel took place on July 24, with the February 16, 2027 release date also confirmed through PlayStation's social announcement dated July 25.

The September 28 announcement detailed pre-orders, deluxe content and the Serpent Bow's combat systems. Santa Monica Studio updated that announcement on October 13, 2026, to introduce the Collector Box and open its pre-orders. That update specifies its contents, price and shared February launch date while explicitly stating that the game is sold separately.
