Story and setting

Grand Theft Auto VI follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a pair drawn together by crime and circumstance. Rockstar’s official story summary says the two already know that life is stacked against them; after an easy score goes wrong, they become entangled in a criminal conspiracy that reaches across Leonida. The publisher describes their survival as depending on their ability to rely on each other. Lucia’s official biography adds that she has recently left Leonida Penitentiary after a fight for her family led to her imprisonment. She wants the better life her mother dreamed of, and is determined to pursue it through her own choices. Jason grew up around criminals, served in the Army, and later worked for drug runners in the Keys. His official profile presents him as someone hoping for an easier life, though his plans grow more complicated after meeting Lucia.

The story takes place in Leonida, a fictional state whose neon-lit Vice City is one of its featured locations. Rockstar’s published locations and materials also identify the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers, and Mount Kalaga National Park. The official character pages introduce a wider cast connected to those places, including Jason’s friend Cal Hampton, Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, music entrepreneur Dre’Quan Priest, the rap duo Real Dimez, bank robber Raul Bautista, and drug runner Brian Heder. Their published profiles establish their roles and backgrounds, but Rockstar has not disclosed the full plot or how each character’s story develops.

Gameplay and confirmed features

Rockstar and Take-Two have described Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience. The official game materials identify it with a mix of shooter, racing, and adventure genres; they do not provide a complete feature list or explain every playable system. Rockstar’s extended look, released August 27, 2026, was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Its official trailers and related materials provide a visual introduction to the cast and Leonida, while leaving many details of the finished game unannounced.

Music is among the features Rockstar has discussed directly. On October 8, 2026, the publisher introduced in-game radio stations and described a selection spanning music stations and talk radio, alongside podcasts. Rockstar has also announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, scheduled for November 19, 2026. These music announcements add detail about the game’s soundscape, but they do not confirm a broader online component or multiplayer mode. The published product description calls the game single-player; Rockstar has not announced a separate multiplayer offering for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Release and platforms

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. Rockstar currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement described the game as a single-player release for those consoles and set the U.S. Standard Edition price at $79.99. The Ultimate Edition is listed at $99.99 and adds a collection of items connected to Jason and Lucia’s story. Rockstar also offers an Ultimate Edition Upgrade for Standard Edition owners.

Digital pre-loading is scheduled to begin at local midnight on November 12, 2026. Rockstar’s support information says the physical version is a code-in-box release, not a disc: the box contains a download code, and copies are expected to be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading. Pre-orders and purchases before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack; digital pre-orders also include one month of GTA+. The official platform listings currently name PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC release has not been announced by Rockstar or Take-Two, so no PC date or edition details are confirmed.

Development and announcements so far

Rockstar revealed Grand Theft Auto VI with its first trailer on December 4, 2023. The company later announced a delay on May 2, 2025, moving the then-planned launch to May 26, 2026. Trailer 2 followed on May 6, 2025, expanding the official look at Jason, Lucia, and Vice City. On November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced another schedule change, setting the current date of November 19, 2026.

The next major commercial update came on June 24, 2026, when Rockstar announced that pre-orders would open the following day and detailed the editions, prices, bonuses, and pre-load timing. An extended look was announced August 6 and released August 27, with Rockstar confirming that it used in-game footage captured on PS5. Later official updates included the in-game radio announcement on October 8 and the launch trailer on October 15, 2026. As of October 18, 2026, the November 19 date remains the release date shown on Rockstar’s official game page.
