What it is
Battlefield 6 is a first-person shooter developed by EA Digital Illusions CE, better known as DICE, and published by Electronic Arts. DICE works within Battlefield Studios alongside Criterion Games, Motive Studio and Ripple Effect. The game combines a single-player military campaign, class-based multiplayer and Battlefield Portal, which provides tools for creating and discovering community-made experiences.
It released on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. The PC version is available through Steam, the EA app and Epic Games Store. No previous Battlefield game is required to understand its story. As of October 25, 2026, Battlefield 6 is in Season 5, with additional maps, weapons, events and gameplay updates released since launch.
Story and setting
The main conflict takes place in 2027, when political turmoil and a high-profile assassination deepen divisions within NATO. Several European countries leave the alliance, while the private military corporation Pax Armata exploits the resulting power vacuum. The campaign and multiplayer share this setting, with NATO’s remaining forces fighting Pax Armata across international battlefields.
The campaign follows Dagger 1-3, an elite Marine Raiders unit. Its members include squad leader and Assault specialist Haz Carter, Engineer Dylan Murphy, Recon specialist Simone “Gecko” Espina and Support specialist Cliff Lopez. CIA operator Lucas Hemlock also features in the officially introduced cast. Players control different squad members rather than one permanent protagonist.
The story spans nine missions across three continents, including combat in Brooklyn and near Egypt’s pyramids. It uses one connected narrative rather than the separate War Stories structure of Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V. Squad commands let players direct teammates to engage and suppress enemies while repositioning.
Gameplay and modes
Four classes define multiplayer roles: Assault, Engineer, Recon and Support. Assault emphasizes frontline movement and attacking positions. Engineers counter enemy vehicles and repair friendly vehicles and equipment. Recon provides reconnaissance, targeting and demolition options. Support supplies ammunition, healing and defensive equipment, giving squads ways to sustain an attack beyond simply winning individual gunfights.
Infantry combat operates alongside tanks, helicopters, jets and other vehicles. Tactical Destruction lets players damage buildings, open routes and remove cover. The Kinesthetic Combat System includes crouch sprinting, weapon mounting and Drag and Revive, which allows a player to move a fallen teammate while reviving them. Mounting a weapon against suitable surfaces reduces recoil.
Conquest revolves around capturing control points and draining the opposing team’s resources. Breakthrough divides the battlefield into sectors contested by attackers and defenders. Rush centers on destroying or protecting M-COM objectives. Escalation progressively reduces the number of available control points, concentrating the fight around the remaining objectives. The multiplayer suite also includes infantry-focused formats such as Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Domination and King of the Hill.
Portal supports customized Community Experiences, including spatial editing, scripted NPC behavior and custom interfaces. Creators can modify existing Battlefield rules or build different experiences using the available assets and tools. Multiplayer crossplay connects PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with friends managed through EA Connect.
Reception
Metacritic’s displayed PlayStation 5 aggregate is 83/100 from 71 critic reviews, categorized as generally favorable. Its separately calculated user score is 6.8/10 and falls in the mixed-or-average category. These are different measures rather than a single combined audience verdict.
EA reported that Battlefield 6 sold more than seven million copies during its first three days, making it the franchise’s biggest opening at that point. The publisher also reported more than 172 million online matches and over 15 million hours watched on streaming services during that opening weekend. Those figures describe launch activity, not the game’s current concurrent population.
Post-launch updates and editions
Season 1 began on October 28, 2025, alongside the separate, free-to-play Battlefield REDSEC experience. REDSEC does not require ownership of Battlefield 6. Battlefield 6’s seasonal model adds maps, modes, weapons and other content; EA states that gameplay-impacting additions are free or earnable without additional spending.
Season 5: Siege of Vegas arrived on October 13, 2026, with Update 2.1.1.0. It introduced Vegas Strip and Area 51, four weapons, vehicle and anti-air balance changes, expanded Portal tools, and further audio, interface and stability improvements. The limited-time Dead Space: Convergence crossover event began on October 20, 2026.
EA’s October 21 roadmap targets November 10, 2026, for European Casino, multiplayer leaderboards and balance changes. December 8 is the announced target for Server Browser, Platoons and revisions to Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City. These remain upcoming additions rather than features already delivered. EA also confirms continued support beyond Season 5, including Season 6 in 2027.
The current purchase options are Standard Edition and Game of the Year Edition, with US list prices of $69.99 and $99.99 respectively. The digital-only Game of the Year Edition became available on October 13, 2026, adding the Ultimate Shortcut Kit, a Battlefield Pro Token, Phantom Pack, Trusted Reserve soldier skin and XP boosts. Existing owners can upgrade in-game. The former Phantom Edition is no longer available to purchase.

FAQ
01Is Battlefield 6 worth buying in 2026?
The paid game is relevant for players seeking its campaign, traditional class-based multiplayer and full Battlefield 6 Portal content, with seasonal gameplay additions free or earnable. Players interested primarily in battle royale can try the separate Battlefield REDSEC without buying Battlefield 6.
02How long does Battlefield 6 take to beat?
The campaign contains nine missions, but EA has not announced an official hours-to-beat estimate. Multiplayer and Portal are ongoing experiences without a fixed campaign-style ending.
03Does Battlefield 6 have co-op or crossplay?
The campaign is single-player, while multiplayer supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
04What is the best platform for Battlefield 6?
EA does not designate a best version, and crossplay lets players connect across all three supported platforms. PC offers uncapped frame rates and ultrawide support, but buyers must meet its hardware and security requirements.
05Is Battlefield 6 DLC or the Game of the Year upgrade worth it?
Additional spending is not required for seasonal gameplay content, which EA says is free or earnable. The Game of the Year upgrade adds progression shortcuts, cosmetics, XP boosts and a Battlefield Pro Token rather than exclusive maps or campaign missions.
06What are the Battlefield 6 PC requirements?
Minimum specifications list Windows 10, a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM, an RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT 6GB or Intel Arc A380, and 55GiB storage. Recommended specifications include Windows 11, a Core i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, an RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT or Arc B580, and an 80GiB SSD; TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot must be enabled, with HVCI- and VBS-capable hardware.
07How much does Battlefield 6 cost now?
US list prices are $69.99 for Standard Edition and $99.99 for Game of the Year Edition. Store discounts change often, so check your platform's store for the current price.
08Does Battlefield 6 require an internet connection or console subscription?
EA lists a persistent internet connection and an EA account among the requirements. PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer on PS5, and applicable paid console subscriptions may also be required on Xbox.
