Story and setting

Phantom Blade Zero is an action RPG developed and published by S-Game, combining hack-and-slash combat with exploration through a dark wuxia world. Its protagonist is Soul, an assassin serving The Order. After being framed for the murder of the organization's patriarch, he is gravely wounded during the ensuing manhunt. A healer saves him, but the treatment gives him only 66 days to discover who engineered the betrayal.

The setting, called the Phantom World, brings Chinese martial arts together with machinery, supernatural powers and folk horror. S-Game calls its aesthetic “kungfupunk”: traditional Chinese imagery and swordplay appear alongside mechanical prosthetics, industrial ruins and modern rock music. Soul's investigation takes him through the Wulin, the martial world caught up in the conspiracy. The officially described setting includes hidden passages, mechanisms and mysteries connected to phenomena such as Memory Flowers and Transcension.

The cast includes Mó Yuan, Soul's father and leader of the Bastion of Mó. Donnie Yen supplies his likeness, facial performance and motion capture. Revealed story footage also shows Soul fighting aboard a moving wagon and crossing weapons with former comrades, including The Hunt, during the opening stages of his journey.

Combat, exploration and difficulty

Combat centers on weapon combinations, defensive timing and martial-arts techniques. Players can equip two main weapons and two secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. S-Game's gameplay demonstrations show parrying, dodging, linked attacks and executions, with elaborate sequences performed through relatively simple inputs. Main weapons provide the foundation of the fighting system, while Phantom Edges introduce additional attacks and ways to approach enemies. The developer demonstrated this equipment structure in its June 7, 2024 gameplay presentation.

The August 17, 2026 deep dive specifies more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded and combined with accessories to shape a build, with ranged attacks and summons among the available options. Defeating certain opponents expands the arsenal. Upgraded weapons can also be reforged to recover their materials and invest those resources in different equipment.

Exploration includes citizens who need help and side quests that can open additional story paths. Difficulty is adjustable: Wayfarer emphasizes experiencing the story, while Hellwalker introduces more advanced, adaptive enemy intelligence. S-Game has also revealed a challenge option named Sixty-Six Days.

S-Game originally described the game's structure as semi-open, with multiple handcrafted maps rather than a single enormous open world. Its published feature descriptions emphasize searching the environment for hidden routes and mechanisms. On PS5, the announced presentation features include DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, with bowstrings and charging cannons given as examples of trigger resistance. The game is also listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced.

Release date, platforms and buying options

Phantom Blade Zero's announced release date is October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. PC pre-orders are available through Steam and the Epic Games Store. For US players, the PS5 listing specifies an unlock at 02:00 UTC on October 29, equivalent to October 28 at 7 p.m. Pacific or 10 p.m. Eastern; S-Game's PlayStation Blog update explicitly notes the October 28 regional date.

The US digital Standard Edition costs $59.99, and the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $69.99. Deluxe includes the game, Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form appearances, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. Pre-ordering grants early access to the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit. These two pre-order items can also be obtained through normal progression; Treasure Basin increases the Remnant Dust drop rate by 10%.

S-Game published PC requirements on August 12, 2026. Both minimum and recommended configurations require 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage. The minimum graphics options are a GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB, targeting 1080p at 30 fps with upscaling. The recommended configuration targets 1440p at 60 fps with upscaling using a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT.

Development and announcements so far

Phantom Blade Zero was revealed on May 24, 2023. S-Game founder Soulframe Liang described it as a spiritual rebirth of Rainblood: Town of Death, his earlier RPG Maker project. The new game uses Unreal Engine 5, while retaining the franchise's martial-arts foundation. The reveal also identified filmmaker and choreographer Kenji Tanigaki as its action director.

The June 7, 2024 gameplay trailer introduced the combat equipment system and a global hands-on demo tour. On January 21, 2025, S-Game published its Year of the Snake trailer, presenting an uninterrupted battle against the Seven Stars. A release-date trailer followed at The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, initially setting launch for September 9, 2026.

On June 2, 2026, Liang announced the move to October 29, explaining that additional time would support defined improvements, including upgraded character models and reworked environments. Pre-orders opened on August 11 in the US, accompanied by an extended trailer. The subsequent August 17 State of Play expanded the official account of weapons, progression, side quests and difficulty. S-Game also disclosed that Donnie Yen has served as creative consultant since 2023.
