When you have a good villain, you can turn your good video game into an amazing video game. The villains always play a big part in the story because they usually leave a lasting impression and sometimes you can even sympathize with them if their intensions are justifiable.
We love to hate things and sometimes we love more the villain than the hero and this list is about villains. For the past 40 years, we saw hundreds of video game villains, some bad, some good, and finally, some unique villains and today we are going to talk about that. These are the 10 best video game villains of all time:
10. Bison – Street Fighter
Also known as Vega. M. Bison is the main antagonist of the Street Fighter series and one of the most famous characters in the game. We will never know what does the “M” really stands for in M. Bison, but what we know is that he is an iconic villain that can appear in any fighting game and will receive acclaim.
As the leader of Shadowloo, his ultimate ambition is to control the world’s governments. He is, in fact, the first villain you fight in the Street Fighter franchise, so it is indeed a challenge fighting him.
9. Lavos – Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is usually considered one of the best RPG video games of all time and also one of the best video games ever made, so it was extremely necessary that its main villain had to be very memorable.
Lavos is a parasitic alien who felt from the skies in 65,000,000 B.C who drained the planet’s energy until its resurfacing in 1999 A.D. Lavos has drawn praise due to its Lovecraftian design, mysterious origin, and importance in the story. It is also unclear if Lavos is truly evil because of his lack of dialogue and motivations.
8. General Shepherd – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty is one of the most famous video game franchises ever and while a lot of villains have appeared throughout the games, the most famous and acclaimed one is General Shepherd.
The immortal plot twist showed in the mission “Loose Ends” is one of the most surprising and heartbreaking betrayals in any video game because he spent much of the time working alongside us throughout the game until that moment when he showed his true colors betraying the Task Force 141, and shooting both Simon “Ghost” Riley and Gary “Roach” Sanderson and setting them on fire.
7. Wily – Mega Man
Dr. Wily is one of the best examples of the “evil genius” villains and he is clearly inspired by the great Albert Einstein. Dr. Wily is an evil scientist which only real goal is destroying Mega Man (or Rockman in Japan), and probably conquer the world along the way.
To be honest, he is a little bit generic when we talk about evil geniuses, but despite that he is very memorable and very recognizable too; he is the main villain of one of the most famous platform video games franchises so almost everybody knows him.
6. Albert Wesker – Resident Evil
You surely can name more than one villain who are better than Wesker, but nobody has more style than him. You cannot deny that he exhales both class and coolness. Wesker is a great old-fashioned villain and is the perfect villain for Resident Evil.
This franchise is known for its monsters and zombies, and even with that in mind, Wesker is more feared than any other enemy in the franchise without counting Nemesis. Albert Wesker is like a Terminator without being a robot, but with the same aura, more power, and the same style.
5. Vaas Montenegro – Far Cry 3
Vaas is not the main antagonist of Far Cry 3, but his presence, charisma, and chaotic aura makes him more important than the true main villain. Portrayed by Michael Mando, Vaas Montenegro is one of the reasons why Far Cry 3 is considered the best entry in the whole franchise.
His interactions with the protagonist, Jason Brody, are highly acclaimed and the more you play the game, the more you notice the changes in Brody personality as result of Vaas Montenegro’s actions. Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5 and Pagan Min from Far Cry 4 were good villains, but Vaas is simply the best.
4. Robotnik – Sonic
Mostly known as Dr. Eggman. Although he is the main villain of the Sonic franchise, he is not physically intimidating, he has an awesome moustache but is not intimidating at all. But he is just like Dr. Wily from Mega Man, his mind is his true weapon; he is extremely intelligent and dangerous.
He is able to create any king of inventing in order to defeat Sonic and steal the Chaos Emeralds to turn the animals from South Island into robots under his controls but sadly for him, none of his inventions were able to defeat the hedgehog.
3. Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII has become one of the best and most influential RPG video games ever created and its villain, Sephiroth is a villain who had most resonated with gamers all over the world. Nicknamed “The One-Winged Angel”, Sephiroth despite his looks, is extremely intimidating and the way he is presented and used throughout the whole game is one of the reasons why he is so unique.
Sephiroth has been cosplayed so many times because of his popularity, and he is one of the best examples of how a villain is far mor popular than the protagonist.
2. Ganon – The Legend of Zelda
When you are the villain the main villain of The Legend of Zelda, one of the most critically acclaimed video game franchise of all time, you have to be a worthy villain, and Ganon is the perfect villain for a franchise like this one.
The possessor of the Triforce of Power, Ganong is a malevolent creature with godlike strength who wants to capture Princess Zelda and conquer both Hyrule and the whole world. He was designed to be the perfect foe for Link and all his appearances have received acclaim from both critics and gamers.
1. Bowser – Super Mario
Let’s be honest, Bowser does not look as intimating as other villains, but if we write down the best characteristics to create a great villain, Bowser would have all of them. The Koopa king is usually considered the best villain in the history of video games because he remains a force to be reckoned in every game he appears.
As the arch-nemesis of Mario, he is recognized in every corner in the world and thanks to his ridiculous popularity, dedication, acclaim, and design, he remains as the best villain in gaming history.
