What it is
Resident Evil Requiem is a single-player survival-horror adventure developed by Capcom Development Division 1 and published by Capcom. The ninth mainline Resident Evil combines two playable protagonists: FBI intelligence analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy. Their connected investigations support different approaches to survival, with Grace facing resource shortages and evasion-focused encounters while Leon brings more extensive combat experience and equipment.
The game released on February 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Windows PC. Nintendo Switch 2 was part of the launch lineup, not a later port. Requiem uses Capcom’s RE ENGINE, and its core gameplay combines exploration, investigations, puzzles, combat and resource management rather than offering a multiplayer campaign.
Director Koshi Nakanishi described the project’s development in a January 29, 2026 interview. Work began on a small scale approximately six years earlier, with the game taking its current form around three years before that interview. He also explained that the team designed Grace’s introduction to accommodate newcomers unfamiliar with the Raccoon City Incident.
Story and setting
Grace’s investigation takes her to the abandoned Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, was murdered. Alyssa was a journalist and survivor of the Raccoon City Incident who continued investigating Umbrella after the outbreak. Grace’s professional work therefore intersects with a location and a death that have personal significance, rather than beginning as an investigation detached from her own history.
Leon investigates another string of deaths in the American Midwest. He is now an experienced Division of Security Operations agent, having survived Raccoon City and confronted subsequent bioterror outbreaks. His story intersects with Grace’s, but the protagonists bring different knowledge, abilities and emotional histories to the events they encounter.
Locations include the Rhodes Hill chronic care center and the ruined remains of Raccoon City. The city still bears the destruction of the government’s 1998 missile strike, authorized during the zombie outbreak. Requiem returns to that aftermath rather than presenting the original incident as a newly unfolding disaster.
Gameplay and modes
Both protagonists support first-person and third-person perspectives, and players can switch between those viewpoints. The camera choice is not restricted to Grace using first-person and Leon using third-person. Capcom developed the two options partly in response to players who found first-person horror uncomfortable but could enjoy similar encounters with an external view of their character.
Grace must consider which enemies to fight and which to avoid because supplies and carrying capacity are limited. Her crafting system uses infected blood to produce items, ammunition and injectors. Investigation and puzzle-solving remain important alongside the decisions about spending ammunition, carrying useful objects and surviving encounters.
Leon’s equipment supports more direct confrontation. His hatchet enables melee attacks and parries, and he can use weapons taken from enemies. His firearms support upgrades and customizable parts, while an attaché case provides space to organize weapons, ammunition and recovery items. The different inventories reinforce the distinction between the two protagonists’ sections.
The protagonists can also affect shared locations. Nakanishi confirmed that enemies Grace kills remain dead when Leon subsequently reaches the same area, and items left on the ground persist. Zombies retain fragments of human behavior, with some repeating familiar actions and others picking up dropped weapons.
The main story is single-player. The additional Leon Must Die Forever minigame unlocks after completing that story and challenges players to clear stages, acquire enhancer abilities and defeat a boss within a time limit. Multiple difficulty levels are available. Photo Mode is another component of the updated game and is accessed through the pause menu.
Reception
Metacritic’s checked PlayStation 5 listing gives Resident Evil Requiem a critic score of 89/100 from 133 reviews and classifies its reception as generally favorable. That figure is specific to the displayed PS5 review collection, rather than a combined score for every platform or a measurement of technical performance.
Individual reviews include PC Gamer’s 92/100 and GameSpot’s 8/10. PC Gamer also reported a playthrough lasting about 10 hours. That duration describes the reviewer’s experience, not an official guaranteed completion time, and should not be treated as a requirement or a fixed campaign length.
Post-launch updates and editions
Capcom’s post-launch support added features as well as fixes. The March 27, 2026 update introduced Photo Mode, corrected progression problems and localization errors, adjusted expressions in certain cutscenes, and addressed PC crashes and visual issues associated with some GPU drivers.
The May 8, 2026 update added Leon Must Die Forever as free content. The PC update also introduced additional DualSense controller functions. A subsequent Steam update dated June 24 reduced the difficulty of two Forever ranks and strengthened selected enhancer skills, including abilities affecting explosives, throwing weapons and temporary attack boosts.
Nakanishi separately announced additional story content on March 10, 2026. That announcement concerns a narrative expansion, distinct from the released combat minigame. Its release date and price have not been announced in the official material verified for this page.
Standard and Deluxe editions remain available. Deluxe combines the base game with the Deluxe Kit, containing costumes, weapon skins, screen filters, charms, an audio pack and additional files. The kit is also sold separately. At the October 25, 2026 check, the US PlayStation Store listed Standard at a promotional $48.99 instead of $69.99, with the offer ending November 5, 2026 at 07:59 UTC; Deluxe was $79.99.

FAQ
01Is Resident Evil Requiem worth playing in 2026?
It is worth considering for players seeking solo survival horror mixed with Leon-led action: the checked PS5 Metacritic aggregate is 89/100. A free demo lets buyers sample the opening before purchasing.
02How long does Resident Evil Requiem take to beat?
PC Gamer reported a playthrough of approximately 10 hours. That is a reviewer-reported experience, not an official fixed completion time.
03Does Resident Evil Requiem have co-op or crossplay?
No: the published game is single-player, including its two-protagonist story. There is no multiplayer crossplay component.
04What is the best platform for Resident Evil Requiem?
Switch 2 is the handheld option, while PS5 Pro has officially detailed ray-tracing and high-frame-rate options. PC buyers should compare their hardware with Capcom's requirements; no official best-platform ranking has been announced.
05Is the Resident Evil Requiem DLC worth buying?
Leon Must Die Forever and Photo Mode are free updates, while the paid Deluxe Kit offers costumes, customization items, an audio pack and additional files. The separately announced story expansion's release date and price have not been announced, so its value cannot yet be assessed.
06What are the PC requirements?
Minimum requirements are 64-bit Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB RAM, a GTX 1660 6GB or RX 5500 XT 8GB, DirectX 12 and an SSD. Recommended hardware is an i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 5500 with an RTX 2060 Super 8GB or RX 6600 8GB, targeting 1080p at 60fps using upscaling.

08Can both characters be played in first-person and third-person?
Yes, both Grace and Leon support first-person and third-person viewpoints. Players can switch perspective rather than being locked to a different camera for each protagonist.
