What it is
Palworld is an open-world survival crafting game developed and published by PocketPair. Its central creatures, Pals, are both adventuring companions and participants in a player-built economy. Players capture and train them, fight alongside them, and assign them to jobs around their bases. Combat, exploration, resource production and creature collecting are connected parts of the game rather than separate activities.
The full version released on July 10, 2026, ending the Early Access period that began on January 19, 2024. Palworld is available on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Mac. That July date marks the 1.0 release, not the first occasion on which players could buy and play it.
PocketPair added the Mac version during Early Access, announcing its availability on March 4, 2025. The developer identifies Apple Silicon-powered Macs as supported hardware. Windows and Mac buyers should therefore check the requirements for their particular version rather than treating the two computer releases as interchangeable.
Story and setting
The adventure takes place in the Palpagos Islands, where Pals inhabit environments shared with human settlements, hostile groups and poachers. Players control a customizable character. The setting contrasts life alongside these creatures with their exploitation: Pals can assist with everyday work, but the game also permits selling them and using them as food.
Version 1.0 expanded the setting with Sunreach, floating islands sustained by Paldium, and access to the World Tree. Sunreach contains its own civilization, new Pals, tower bosses and specialized mining resources. The World Tree is central to the story and the mystery surrounding the factions competing over the islands' towers.
Exploration also includes dungeons and wildlife sanctuaries. The latter contain rare creatures and protected habitats, making them destinations for players pursuing unusual Pals. These places sit within a survival setting where gathering supplies and preparing companions remain relevant alongside following the story.
Gameplay and modes
Palworld combines direct combat with commanding and developing Pals. The player's equipment ranges from bows and spears to assault rifles and rocket launchers. Pal Spheres capture weakened creatures, while different Pal attributes and skills influence the companions available for particular tasks. The official game description emphasizes capturing, training, building and automation as its connected foundations.
Bases provide production lines for resources, crops and power. Pals have different working abilities and personalities, and players provide food and rest to maintain their well-being. Outside the base, suitable Pals serve as mounts for travel over land, water and through the air. Breeding allows offspring to inherit characteristics from their parents, giving creature development a role beyond simply filling a collection.
The 1.0 release added 72 Pals, bringing the announced total to 287. It also introduced Awakening and Mutation as additional ways to strengthen them, alongside extensive ability and balance changes. Base defense was reworked around successive enemy waves, while multiplayer improvements included expanded guild permissions and dedicated-server voice chat where enabled. The voice-chat feature is not supported on WinGDK.
Single-player and online co-op are supported. Hosted online co-op accommodates up to four players, while dedicated servers support up to 32. Arena battles provide a competitive component, and players can trade Pals. Cross-platform play is also available: PocketPair announced the Crossplay Update on March 19, 2025, well before the full release.
Reception
Palworld's PC version has a Metacritic score of 78 out of 100 from 15 critic reviews, classified by the aggregator as generally favorable. The listed reviews praise different aspects of its combination of survival, creature collecting and production systems, while criticism includes its story, repetitive activities and uneven presentation. That aggregate describes the PC review sample and should not be presented as a separate score for every platform.
The full release also attracted a substantial returning audience. On July 13, 2026, PocketPair reported that Palworld had exceeded 850,000 concurrent players on Steam following the arrival of version 1.0. That figure measures simultaneous Steam players, not copies sold or the current active population.
Post-launch updates and editions
Support continued after the July launch. Version 1.0.4 added the sub-missions Beyond Dimensions and From the Far Side of the Moon, alongside fishing adjustments, combat changes and stability work. Version 1.0.5, released on September 15, 2026, addressed textures loading at unusually low resolution and map-icon filters switching off after a respawn.
The latest named update announcement is Palworld: Side by Side. PocketPair revealed it on October 20, 2026, and gave winter 2026 as its release window. The announcement identifies it as an update to Palworld, but does not provide an exact release day or detailed feature list.
The standalone base game has a US Steam list price of $29.99. A soundtrack is sold separately; it is not an additional gameplay campaign. PocketPair also offers Steam bundles pairing Palworld with other games, including RuneScape: Dragonwilds. These are purchase bundles containing separate games, not expansions to the Palpagos Islands.

FAQ
01Is Palworld worth buying in 2026?
It is worth considering if creature collecting, survival crafting and base automation are priorities, with the full version now available. Its PC Metascore is 78 out of 100 from 15 critic reviews, rather than an indication of universal critical acclaim.
02How long does Palworld take to beat?
An official completion-time estimate is not announced. Story progression sits alongside ongoing collecting, breeding, construction and multiplayer, so there is no confirmed universal hour count.
03Does Palworld have co-op and crossplay?
Yes: online co-op supports up to four players, and dedicated servers support up to 32. Cross-platform play is available following the Crossplay Update introduced on March 19, 2025.
04What is the best platform for Palworld?
Steam is a practical choice if its officially listed Steam Workshop support matters to you. Otherwise, choose according to your hardware and preferred storefront: Palworld is available on Windows, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Mac, with cross-platform multiplayer supported.
05Is Palworld's DLC worth buying?
The verified Steam listing offers a separate soundtrack, not a paid gameplay expansion, so it is a purchase for listeners rather than additional adventures. Side by Side's price and detailed contents are not announced.
06What are Palworld's PC requirements?
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-9400F, 16 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1660, DirectX 11 and 40 GB of SSD storage as minimum requirements. Recommended specifications include 32 GB RAM and an RTX 3060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT.
07How much does Palworld cost?
The standalone base game's US Steam list price is $29.99. Storefront promotions and bundles can change the checkout price.
