What it is
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a single-player role-playing game developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. Its battles combine turn-based decisions with real-time defensive inputs, attack timing and free aiming. The game is Sandfall’s debut release and uses Unreal Engine 5, with a fantasy setting inspired by Belle Époque France rather than a historical recreation of the country.
It released on April 24, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. The PC release is available through Steam and the Epic Games Store, among other supported storefronts. The central experience is a story-led adventure in which one player controls a party of expeditioners; it is not a cooperative or competitive multiplayer RPG.
Story and setting
The story begins with Lumière living under the threat of the Paintress. Each year, she paints a number on a distant monolith, condemning people who reach that age to disappear. The number decreases annually, steadily shortening the population’s remaining lives. Expedition 33 leaves the city to confront her and break that cycle, following the traces of earlier expeditions along the way.
Gustave is an engineer who has worked on Lumière’s defenses and agricultural systems. He commits his remaining time to securing a future for the city’s children. His foster sister Maelle is only 16 and approaches the expedition differently: leaving Lumière offers an opportunity to discover the wider world and establish her own identity.
Their companions include Lune, a researcher determined to understand the Paintress, and Sciel, a former farmer and teacher whose outward warmth conceals a painful history. Monoco belongs to the Gestrals, beings who relish combat and are unaffected by the Paintress. The journey extends beyond Lumière into locations including the Island of Visages and the Forgotten Battlefield, with optional discoveries and the remnants of previous attempts to end the annual erasure.
Gameplay and modes
Sandfall calls the battle system reactive turn-based combat. Players choose actions and plan character combinations during their turns, then respond directly to enemy attacks through dodges, jumps and parries. Successful defensive timing can enable counterattacks, while offensive timing improves attacks and a free-aim system allows players to target enemy weak points. Strategic preparation and execution therefore both matter.
Party development uses equipment, attributes, skills and character-specific mechanics. Pictos provide modifiers that become learnable passive abilities called Luminas after four battles. These systems let players combine effects rather than rely exclusively on a character’s initial role. Lune generates elemental Stains through her abilities and consumes them to strengthen other skills; Gustave’s mechanical arm and Sciel’s Foretell system provide different approaches to combat.
Outside battles, an overworld connects individual environments, optional encounters and side activities. Players can establish camp, develop their party and speak with companions. Some merchants can also be challenged in combat to unlock additional wares. Special companions provide further ways to travel and reach hidden areas on the world map.
The game remains a single-player experience. Photo Mode is an additional creative feature, not a multiplayer component. Post-launch usability changes include a Battle Retry prompt, clearer Lumina-cost information and accessibility improvements to the presentation of Lune’s Stains.
Reception
Critical reception was strongly positive overall. Reviews repeatedly highlighted the visual identity, music, character performances and the combination of traditional RPG planning with active defensive play. The response was not unanimous: PC Gamer praised the distinctive world while criticizing aspects of the combat’s emphasis on timing and its relationship with character builds. That distinction matters for buyers who enjoy turn-based strategy but prefer not to depend on reflex-based inputs.
The game also achieved substantial commercial success. On April 24, 2026, Sandfall officially announced eight million copies sold while marking the first anniversary. That is a dated developer-confirmed milestone, separate from subsequent third-party sales estimates.
Post-launch updates and editions
Support continued after launch through fixes, accessibility changes, performance improvements and additional content. The July 2025 version 1.4.0 update introduced Battle Retry and frame-generation and low-latency support for compatible NVIDIA and Intel graphics hardware. It also added dialogue autoplay and separate exploration and combat volume controls.
The free Thank You update rolled out on December 12, 2025. Its additions include Verso’s Drafts, a new playable environment, alongside more music by Lorien Testard, challenging late-game encounters in the Endless Tower and Photo Mode. Sandfall also confirmed 13 new weapons and 16 additional Luminas, expanding the available equipment and passive-effect combinations. New text localizations and performance work accompanied the content.
The April 24, 2026 anniversary update added hairstyles. Patch 1.5.6 followed on June 30, 2026, introducing Arabic text support alongside further fixes. These updates are distinct from the paid Deluxe cosmetics.
The standard digital edition has a US list price of $49.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition lists at $59.99. Deluxe adds the Flowers collection and the Clair and Obscur character outfits rather than another story campaign. Physical options include the Lumière Edition and the original Collector’s Edition, which packages a Monolith music-box statuette with an artbook, Steelbook and Deluxe content. The separately offered Monolith Set is a collectibles package and does not include the game or its digital DLC.

02How long does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 take to beat?
Sandfall’s pre-release estimate was more than 30 hours for the main game, with a comparable amount of optional content. That is a developer estimate rather than a guaranteed completion time, and the subsequent Thank You update adds further activities.
03Does Expedition 33 have co-op, multiplayer or crossplay?
No: Expedition 33 is a single-player game, with no co-op or competitive multiplayer. Multiplayer crossplay therefore does not apply.
