Marvel's Wolverine

What it is

Marvel's Wolverine is a single-player, third-person action-adventure developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in collaboration with Marvel Games. It follows Logan through an original Marvel story about protecting mutants while confronting his forgotten past. The game released worldwide on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, with enhancements for PS5 Pro.

Insomniac revealed the project on September 9, 2021, alongside Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Its September 24, 2025 presentation established a Fall 2026 release window, and the studio confirmed the exact date on February 24, 2026. The finished game is narrative-driven rather than open world. PS5 features include DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, SSD-powered loading and 3D audio. The ESRB rates it M for Mature 17+, citing blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, partial nudity and strong language.

Story and setting

James “Logan” Howlett, portrayed by Liam McIntyre, returns to the mutant task force Team X three years after leaving it. Mutants face kidnapping and persecution, and Logan's search for answers intersects with the team's efforts to protect them. Jean Grey, portrayed by Krizia Bajos, is a telekinetic mutant and a central figure in the story.

The threat includes Bolivar Trask, an industrialist whose belief in human superiority drives his campaign against mutants. His hired Reavers are a cybernetically enhanced militia responsible for capturing them. Logan and Jean join forces against those enemies, while Logan also struggles to understand the history that continues to shape his life.

The journey crosses Canada's wilderness, Tokyo and the fictional island nation of Madripoor. Officially revealed characters include Mystique, Omega Red and Sabretooth. Insomniac's July 23, 2026 story presentation also introduced The Hand as an enemy faction and highlighted Deathstrike. These locations and encounters belong to an original story rather than an adaptation of a particular film.

Gameplay and modes

Combat centers on close-range claw attacks, with stalking and ambushes available alongside direct fighting. Techniques include named moves such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush, while Critical Strikes provide finishing opportunities alone or alongside other characters. Attacks, parries and kills build Rage, which supports stronger attacks and Logan's Healing Factor. The official extended gameplay showcase also demonstrated a motorcycle pursuit involving vehicle-to-vehicle fighting.

Players can equip four Special Techniques simultaneously and use Adaptations to modify capabilities such as bullet resistance, Rage effectiveness and parry timing. Beyond the main story, Nightmare Doors provide combat and traversal challenges, collectible whisky bottles reveal memories, and material crates support suit crafting. Unlockable suits draw on different depictions of Wolverine across comics and other media.

New Game Plus includes exclusive Techniques and higher Level Caps. Mission Replay revisits story sections, Nightmare Challenges provide high-score targets, and Photo Mode captures images during gameplay. These are single-player components; the game has no cooperative or competitive multiplayer.

Accessibility settings include separate adjustments for enemy health, enemy damage and stealth awareness, alongside dodge and parry timing options. Players can reduce game speed, automate quick-time events, remap controls and use navigation assistance. Visual and audio options include high-contrast presentation, subtitle customization and screen-reader support. Violence settings alter blood, dismemberment and visible healing damage, while a profanity filter supports US English.

Reception

Published reviews differ over how successfully the combat sustains the adventure. VGC awarded Marvel's Wolverine 3/5 in its September 10, 2026 review. Reviewer Jordan Middler praised the visuals and character work, particularly Logan and Jean's relationship, but criticized combat that he felt changed too little over the course of the game. That score is VGC's individual verdict, not an aggregate rating.

Destructoid awarded the game 8/10, praising its performances, presentation and interpretation of Wolverine while also identifying repetitive combat as a limitation. Its reviewer reported a roughly 15-hour playthrough on normal difficulty. That duration describes one reviewer's experience, not a developer-issued completion-time estimate or a promise about completionist play.

Post-launch updates and editions

Post-launch support has addressed visual guidance, stability, progression and presentation. Update 1.001.006 introduced settings for collectible-related Senses indicators, including Whisky Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues and Nightmare Door Roots. Update 1.002.001, documented on October 6, 2026, added control over story-related Scent trails through the Hint button, assigned to R3 by default, alongside further bug and crash fixes.

A separate graphics update introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, on the standard PS5. PlayStation announced that addition on October 1, 2026, describing improvements to image detail and stability. Insomniac's 1.002.000 notes also list fixes involving progression, Photo Mode, interface elements, accessibility behavior and localization. PS5 Pro support includes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR.

The US PlayStation Store currently lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition at $79.99. Digital Deluxe includes the game, five exclusive suits, five exclusive claws, four Technique Points, Classic Brown Suit and Reflective Claws early unlocks, and four PlayStation Avatars. Insomniac identifies the additional suits and claws as cosmetic. Standard Edition owners can purchase the Digital Deluxe Upgrade separately for $10.00.
