What it is

Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure developed and published by Pearl Abyss. It follows Kliff and the Greymanes across Pywel, combining a central story with exploration, combat, quests and activities outside battle. The released game is single-player, rather than an online world shared with other players.

Crimson Desert released on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Mac. Pearl Abyss confirmed that date during State of Play on September 24, 2025, after earlier release windows changed. The project’s public history stretches back to its 2019 reveal and the gameplay presentation at The Game Awards in December 2020.

The current game incorporates the free Crimson Desert Enhanced update, released on August 25, 2026. Enhanced is an update to the existing game, not a separate purchase required from owners.

Story and setting

The story begins with the Greymanes suffering an ambush by their enemies, the Black Bears. Members of the faction are killed or scattered, leaving Kliff to find the survivors and rebuild the group. His search brings him into contact with other factions and a threat extending beyond the Greymanes’ immediate struggle.

Pywel contains cities, wilderness, ancient ruins, mountains and desert landscapes. Its five regions are Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert. Above the continent lies the Abyss, a realm of floating structures connected to the game’s wider conflict and exploration.

Kliff is the central protagonist, while Oongka and Damiane are also playable characters with their own combat styles. Having three playable characters does not make the adventure cooperative: character switching belongs to the single-player experience. Post-launch updates have expanded what Oongka and Damiane can do, including access to the Abyss.

Gameplay and modes

Exploration involves more than travelling between quest markers. Players can climb, ride horses, glide and use abilities to cross vertical terrain. Official demonstrations also show machinery and other mounts, while settlements provide requests ranging from deliveries to the liberation of occupied strongholds.

Combat combines weapon attacks with unarmed moves, grapples, evasions and guards. Available weapon types include swords, spears, axes and ranged weapons. Players can chain attacks and skills, develop abilities and improve equipment using resources obtained through exploration, quests and encounters. Equipment and skill choices provide different ways to approach fights rather than restricting the game to one weapon style.

Outside combat, Pywel supports fishing, gathering, mining, cooking and activities at the Greymane camp. Resources feed into equipment improvement and other systems, while camp activities include farming and outfit customization. Housing also received additions after release, including outdoor decoration.

Free updates added difficulty settings and combat content such as Boss Rematch and Re-blockade. These are components of the solo game, not competitive or cooperative multiplayer modes. Cross-save support was also added after launch, allowing supported platform accounts to share progress. Cross-save should not be confused with crossplay: there is no multiplayer session for players on different systems to join.

Reception

Metacritic lists the PC version at 77/100 from 115 critic reviews, placing it in the aggregator’s generally favorable category. That figure is a platform-specific critic aggregate, not a player rating or a separate assessment of every subsequent update.

The reviews collected by Metacritic show a recurring divide. Critics praised the density of the open world, freedom of exploration and opportunities for experimentation, while criticism focused on controls, menus, clarity and narrative cohesion. Individual scores therefore represent substantially different responses to the same combination of systems.

The review dates also matter. Much of the critical coverage accompanied the March release, whereas Enhanced subsequently added story material and other changes. The aggregate should not be presented as a dedicated review score for the August update.

Post-launch updates and editions

Pearl Abyss has supported Crimson Desert with content additions, interface changes and technical fixes. Its August 12, 2026 retrospective counted 17 patches, including difficulty options, storage improvements, additional skills, mounts, pets and combat activities. Enhanced followed on August 25 with new cutscenes, story refinements, five additional voice-over languages and Arabic interface and subtitle support.

The latest published hotfix is version 2.03.02, dated September 23, 2026. Its notes address quest progression, missing map icons and an Abyss progression blocker. The notice distinguishes availability by storefront, including a later rollout for the Mac App Store build.

Charting the Unknown remains unreleased as of October 25, 2026. Pearl Abyss moved its release date to October 29, 2026, announcing the two-week delay on September 30. The expansion is listed at $24.99 and introduces ocean exploration, shipbuilding, underwater areas, additional character stories, expanded housing, relationships and Garden of Trials combat content. Some activities require main-story or camp progress. The Mac App Store version is excluded from the expansion’s initial release.

The US Standard Edition list price is $69.99, and the digital Deluxe Edition is $79.99. The officially announced physical Deluxe and Collector’s editions carry list prices of $89.99 and $279.99 respectively. Deluxe equipment packs should not be confused with the separately sold Charting the Unknown expansion.

Pearl Abyss has also described a playable Nintendo Switch 2 version undergoing optimization, targeting the first half of 2027 without a firm release date.
