Learning how to change Discord name starts with picking the right name field. Your username identifies your account, your display name is your everyday public name, and a server nickname changes what you are called in one particular community.
For a quick cosmetic change, open Edit Profile and change your display name. To replace your unique account handle, use Username in your account settings; for a guild character name or squad-specific alias, edit your server profile instead.
This guide covers desktop, browser, iOS and Android using Discord’s official guidance checked on 25 October 2026. Start with the comparison below, then follow the steps for the field you actually want to change.
Discord username, display name and nickname: the differences
Discord’s username and display name guidance separates your unique identifier from the name people normally see. A server nickname takes priority over your display name inside that server.
| Name type | What it does | Must be unique? | Best reason to change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Username | Identifies your account for adding friends and checking identity | Yes | You want a different shareable account handle |
| Global display name | Your main visible name where no nickname overrides it | No | You want a new public name across Discord |
| Server nickname | Overrides your display name in one server | No | You want a guild, character or community-specific name |
For example, you might choose pixel.ranger as your username, Pixel Ranger as your display name and Rowan | Healer in your raid server. Those are suggested examples, not claims that the username is available.
My advice: keep your account handle reasonably stable and use the more flexible visible names for seasonal jokes, character swaps and clan tags. It makes your next rebrand much less fiddly.
How to change Discord name on desktop and browser
Change your Discord username
The desktop app and browser use the same account-setting route. Discord’s dedicated username instructions also confirm that changing this field requires your password.
- Open Discord and select the cogwheel beside your profile area at the bottom left to open User Settings.
- Open My Account. Discord’s newer profile guidance also refers to an Account page, so look for the account details containing Username.
- Select Edit beside Username.
- Enter your proposed handle, check its spelling and enter your Discord password when requested.
- Complete the confirmation shown in the editor, then check the username on your profile.
Before confirming, read it aloud as though you were giving it to a new teammate over voice chat. A handle you can explain in one breath is usually a better choice than a string of nearly identical characters.
Stuck choosing? GamerBolt’s Discord username generator generates rule-compliant ideas to shortlist. It does not check availability on Discord, so enter your favourite in Discord’s username editor.
Change your global display name
If you searched for “change display name Discord”, this is the setting you probably meant. Discord’s profile customisation guide places profile editing under Profiles on desktop and Edit Profile on mobile.
- Open User Settings using the bottom-left cogwheel.
- Select Profiles and make sure you are editing your User Profile, rather than a particular server profile.
- Find Display Name and replace the existing text.
- Select Save Changes to keep the edit.
You can also open your bottom-left profile card and select Edit Profile. Take a moment to check the preview before leaving the editor, especially if your proposed name uses decorative characters.
How to change your Discord name on iOS and Android
Discord documents a shared mobile route rather than separate naming procedures for iPhone and Android. Start from your bottom-right avatar or You area; account changes and profile changes then follow different branches.
Change your username on mobile
- Open the Discord app and tap your avatar or You area at the bottom right.
- Tap the cogwheel to open Settings.
- Choose Account, then Username.
- Enter your new handle and provide your password when prompted.
- Complete the on-screen confirmation and check your profile afterwards.
Do not stop at the first editable name you find. Display Name belongs to the profile editor, while Username belongs to account details. Check the label before typing, particularly if you are updating both.
Change your display name on mobile
- Tap your bottom-right avatar or You area.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Make sure the editor is showing your main user profile.
- Edit Display Name, then tap Save.
For a clean result, try a recognisable spelling first and add decoration afterwards. Ask yourself how the name will look to somebody glancing at their phone between matches, rather than only judging the larger profile preview.
How to change your Discord server nickname
A Discord server nickname is useful when your account name does not match your in-game character. Discord’s server nickname instructions explain that your role needs Change Nickname permission to edit your own.
Desktop and browser
- Open the server where you want a different name.
- Right-click yourself in the member list, or right-click your avatar on one of your messages.
- Select Edit Per-server Profile.
- Edit Server Nickname and save the change.
iOS and Android
- Open the relevant server.
- Tap the server’s name and choose Edit Per-server Profile. Alternatively, tap your own avatar on a message or in the member list to access that editor.
- Check that the intended server is selected.
- Edit Server Nickname, then tap Save.
For the text-command alternative, enter /nick followed by your desired nickname in a server text channel. This does not bypass permissions: if nickname changes are denied, the command cannot override that decision.
For an organised gaming community, I would favour a readable format such as Rowan | Support over a long slogan. Check the server’s naming rules first, especially before adding ranks, staff-like labels or a competitive team tag.
Name rules and the Discord name change cooldown
Username and display name limits
- Username: 2–32 characters, using lowercase Latin letters, numbers, underscores and full stops.
- No username spaces or emoji: other special characters are not permitted, and two consecutive full stops are not allowed.
- Display name: 1–32 characters, with support for spaces, capitals, emoji and non-Latin characters.
- Content rules: names must follow Discord’s Community Guidelines, including its restrictions on impersonation and prohibited content.
Discord’s developer documentation also specifies 1–32 characters for server nicknames. Treat the editor’s validation as the final check when combining unusual characters or emoji.
How often can you change each name?
The published Discord name change cooldown for usernames is up to two changes per week. Discord’s dedicated username article does not specify a universal reset day or promise an exact countdown after every edit, so follow any retry information your account shows.
There is an official-documentation wrinkle: an older mobile getting-started article still mentions two username changes per hour. The dedicated username pages specify two per week, which is the safer rule to plan around rather than promising extra changes.
Display names can be changed whenever you want. Discord’s nickname support article does not publish a comparable weekly allowance for server nicknames; permissions and any in-app restriction still apply.
What Nitro adds: styles and per-server profiles
Ordinary name changes do not require Nitro. The full Nitro plan adds Display Name Styles and premium per-server profiles; Nitro Basic does not include those benefits in Discord’s current plan comparison.
Display Name Styles
Discord’s Display Name Styles FAQ covers fonts, colours and effects. These change your name’s appearance, not the spelling or availability of your unique username.
- Desktop/browser: open your bottom-left profile card, choose Edit Profile, then select the + under Display Name Style.
- iOS/Android: open You, choose Edit Profile, adjust Font, Effect or Color, then tap Apply.
- Without Nitro: you can preview styles, but cannot save them to your profile.
Mobile styling is static rather than animated. In servers, the selected font can appear, but style colours and effects do not replace server role colours or enhanced role styles; appearance also varies between chat lists, messages and profiles.
Premium per-server profiles
Discord’s per-server profile guide explains the Nitro extras: separate server avatars, banners, About Me sections and profile themes. A server nickname itself remains free, subject to permissions.
Open Edit Per-server Profile from your server avatar, choose the correct community, make your changes and save. Discord supports server-avatar editing on desktop, browser, iOS and Android, but currently limits server-specific avatar decoration and profile effect editing to desktop/browser.
For example, I would pair a fantasy character portrait with a raid-server nickname while keeping a simpler identity elsewhere. You do not need to rebuild your main profile just to suit one group.
Why your username is unavailable, and how to fix problems
The handle is taken or rejected
Usernames must be unique. If your preferred one is taken, try a meaningful extra word, number, underscore or full stop; changing capitalisation will not create a different handle because usernames are forced lowercase.
Also check length, unsupported punctuation and consecutive dots before assuming somebody owns it. A policy restriction is different from an availability problem, so read the actual error rather than repeatedly submitting the same spelling.
If every variation feels like a compromise, generate some fresh username ideas and shortlist three you would happily keep. The tool generates rule-compliant suggestions, not availability results or reserved handles.
The wrong name is still showing
First identify where the mismatch occurs. Server nicknames override global display names, and a friend can set a private friend nickname that takes priority in their view. Neither situation necessarily means your edit failed.
- Only wrong in one server: inspect that server’s nickname rather than changing your global name again.
- Nickname control missing: ask an administrator about Change Nickname permission.
- Username claim blocked: check account verification; Discord requires email or phone verification to claim a new username.
- Edit seems unsaved: reopen the same field and check whether the new value was retained.
- Unexpected app behaviour: update and restart the app, then try the desktop browser editor as a comparison.
Treat restarting or switching clients as diagnostic steps, not cooldown bypasses. If the problem persists, record the exact error, platform and field involved before contacting support, and remove passwords or personal account details from screenshots.
FAQ
Can I change my Discord name without Nitro?
Yes. Usernames, ordinary display names and permitted server nickname changes are free. Consider Nitro only if you want the premium styling or profile extras, not simply a new spelling.
Why did my new display name not appear in my server?
Check your server nickname first: it takes priority there. Edit the server-specific field if that is the name you actually want to replace.
Can someone else have the same display name?
Yes. Display names are not exclusive. When checking somebody’s identity, inspect their unique username rather than trusting a familiar display name alone.
Does Nitro remove the username change cooldown?
Discord’s published username allowance does not offer a Nitro exception. Do not buy a subscription expecting additional username edits.
Can I bring back my old four-digit Discord tag?
No. The current username system does not let you restore a discriminator such as #1234. A legacy username badge is not an editable replacement for your current handle.
Can a moderator change my name?
Someone with the appropriate server nickname-management permission can change your nickname in that community, not your account username or global display name. If it keeps being changed back, ask about the server’s naming policy.
