Good old Spidey has undoubtedly had one heck of a gaming career, and with Spider-Man 2’s most recent release, we have plenty of Spider-Man games to choose from. Today, we will look at the top 10 Spider-Man games so far!
Please note that this is our list, and if yours is different, we would love to read about it in the comments section.
11. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
Xbox 360
No doubt some surprised looks at Spider-Man: Friend or Foe making the list, but hear us out! We are specifically talking about the Xbox 360 version as the extra bit of polish that the Xbox 360 game has over the PS2, PSP, and Wii versions makes it the better game. Here, one player plays Spidey, and the other plays a villain, such as Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom. It plays more like a classic 16-bt era beat-em-up, but in 3D, and it is so much fun to play with another player. It is also set in the Spider-Man movie (Toby McGuire) universe, which is pretty cool. This is a bit of a hidden gem!
10. The Amazing Spider-Man vs The Kingpin
Sega CD
While many Sega CD games would be enhanced ports of their Sega Genesis cousins, The Amazing Spider-Man vs The Kingpin went further. This is not just a standard 2D action game. Well, ok, it is. However, The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin was way more complex than the other Spidey games at the time. The levels were significant and had you exploring them, not to the extent of Spider-Man 2, of course, but at the time, it was huge. Plus, this version has epic and kind of hilarious animated scenes. This is a crucial title for the Sega CD and a damn fine Spider-Man game too!
9. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Released in 2008, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was the first Spider-Man game of three that were their series. This one is a ton of fun as the “gimmick” here is that you can change between the regular red suit and the black suit at will, and each suit offers you a different way to play. It may lack the refinement in the control department that Insomniac’s Spider-Man would offer. However, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows has an epic story with a vast symbiote invasion; it certainly gets us excited for the upcoming Spider-Man 2 thinking about this game!
8. Spider-Man: The Video Game
Arcade
Made by Sega, Spider-Man: The Video Game released in 1991 was an excellent four-player beat-up. As well as playing as Spider-Man, players could also play as Black Cat, Hawkeye, and The Sub Mariner! The game is fast and frantic, with some fantastic graphics that simply could not be replicated on the home consoles! Speaking of which, Spider-Man: The Video Game has never seen a home port! Hopefully, one day, it will; it would be awesome if Arcade 1up could make one of their home arcade machines based around this game!
7. Spider-Man
PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64
Spider-Man, when it was released in 2000, was a massive hit. While it is the PlayStation original that most people think of, Spider-Man was also released for the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Dreamcast. This is a 3rd person action game and the first game at the time to bring Spider-Man into the 3D world! It is like you are playing through an episode of the classic Spider-Man 90s animated series, and each chapter in the game is like its own comic book. It may be a bit rough around the edges compared to games like Spider-Man 2, but at the time (and even now), this was a lot of fun, and it still has a ton of charm. It did get a sequel, but we think the first game is slightly better.
6. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions came in between Web of Shadows (which we have already talked about) and Edge of Time. All three are good games in their own right, but Shattered Dimensions is the best. This game still offered that 3rd person action game experience. However, this game did the Spidey multiverse/Spider-Verse thing before, and it was fabulous! As well as playing as regular Spider-Man. You can also play Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, and Ultimate Spider-Man in an epic and crazy story that is so much fun.
5. Ultimate Spider-Man
PlayStation 2, Nintendo Game Cube, Xbox
The Spider-Man game that had to follow Spider-Man 2 would always have a tough time, but Ultimate Spider-Man does more than enough to stand on its own. This is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series, a Spidey reboot in the early 00s. This game boasts some incredible cell-shaded graphics that still hold up to this day. It has a little bit of an open-world thing going on, but the big thing here was that as well as playing Spider-Man, this game also lets you play as Venom. While we are talking about the console versions, we want to give a shoutout to the Nintendo DS version,,, which is a fun game in its own right.
4. Spider-Man 2
PlayStation 2, Nintendo Game Cube, Xbox
To say that Spider-Man 2 was a game-changer is a massive understatement. Based on the hit movie of the same name, this has to be regarded as one of the best movie tie-in games ever. The first Spider-Man movie game was fun but felt more like an extension of what we had with Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 on the original PlayStation. This game gave us our first Spider-Man open-world experience, a sophisticated new web-swinging system, and many fun extra missions that we could do, too! Spider-Man two still holds up to this day as a fun Spider-Man experience!
3. Spider-Man: Miles Morales
PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
Spider-Man: Miles Morales may not have had the epic story that the previous Spider-Man did, but the gameplay was tighter here. The story here is still great stuff, but the game is a much shorter experience. Miles is just so much fun to play,, and he has abilities that Peter Parker does not,, arguably making him a more fun Spider-Man. While this is on PlayStation 4, Spider-Man: Miles Morales was one of the biggest launch titles for the PlayStation 5. Plus, if you get the Ultimate Edition of this, you also get Spider-Man Remastered included! This is a great in-between for Spider-Man 2!
2. Spider-Man Remastered
PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
When Insomniac first released Spider-Man as a PlayStation exclusive,, it was a huge deal! This epic open-world game featured a tremendous story that was brought to life with fantastic voice acting! We had a huge New York to explore, and tons of side crimes, upgrades, and secrets to be found. Spider-Man truly is one of the best games for the PlayStation 4. This game did for Spider-Man what the Arkham series did for Batman! The game was made even better when it was given a little bit of an upgrade when it was released for the PlayStation 5.
1. Spider-Man 2: Remastered
Platforms: Current-generation consoles and PC
In a very short span of time, “Spider-Man 2 Remastered” has peaked the Spider-Man gaming experience, making it unmatched by anyone interacting with the game for the first time. Despite being a great game when it was first released, the remastered edition makes the original even better with significantly enhanced graphics that show you what New York is like in such amazing and vivid detail. In this improved urbanscape, players take to the sky as Spider-Man, with a perfect shot at slinging web through an urban metropolis by the seat of his pants, yet unbelievably fluid in terms of discrete mechanics.
One of the most outstanding elements about this game is its narrative depth, which has become so good at spinning a gripping tale that plunges into the heart of not just Spider-Man’s world but world-building, merging action with drama and humor to create something that feels authentic. While voice acting and character animations are already remarkable, they created more flesh to this detailed universe.
But what distinguishes “Spider-Man 2 Remastered” is the ideal interweaving of exciting action and captivating story. The game has a wide selection of missions and side quests, all designed to improve the overall experience. The narrative is a superhero affair, from high-stakes battles with iconic villains to quieter, more personal moments that capture the duality of Spider-Man’s life as a superhero Peter Parker. The remastered version improves upon all these things, making it not only a fine Spider-Man game but also an exceptional title in the superhero category.
So, there you have it: the top 11 Spider-Man games. There have been many good Spider-Man games over the years, and if your top 10 list is different, we would love to check it out!
