It’s been a while since we saw a September as utterly packed with high-profile releases as this one. While last year’s September gave us one of the most anticipated indie releases ever in Hollow Knight: Silksong, it seems 2026 is trying to outdo its predecessor for sheer hype.
Whether it’s prestige PlayStation releases, fascinating RPGs from doyennes of the genre, or new survival horror experiences to sink your teeth into, September has lots for the discerning gamer.
Let’s take a look at all of the games that are worth your time as autumn 2026 gets into gear. This is going to be a tough one for your wallet.
Orbitals (Switch 2 – September 3rd)
If, like us, you felt like the praise for Hazelight’s It Takes Two was a touch overblown (good lord, that writing), then Orbitals might be the game to take that bad taste out of your mouth.
Much like Hazelight’s offering, this one is a co-op adventure in which you’ll need to take advantage of unique asymmetrical play in order to make your way through the game.
However, Orbitals’ secret weapon is its gorgeous ‘80s anime-inspired aesthetic, which looks like it’s going to make every frame a joy to behold as well as to play.
The Blood of Dawnwalker (PC, PS5, Xbox Series – September 3rd)
More solitary types should content themselves with The Blood of Dawnwalker, the debut title from upstart studio Rebel Wolves (although many of its staffers have worked on The Witcher).
Dawnwalker is an open-ended RPG set in 14th-century Europe, and its big selling point is that quests can often be tackled in a non-linear fashion, allowing you to shape your adventure as you see fit.
Whether the game can pull off this ambitious gambit remains to be seen, but it’s not long before we get to find out.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword (PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 – September 4th)
Fittingly for Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s relentless hack-and-slash gameplay, Capcom’s latest adventure is continuing the onslaught of games worth checking out in early September.
This continuation of the legendary Japanese studio’s action series sees protagonist Miyamoto Musashi hacking and, yes, slashing his way through hordes of demons in Edo-period Japan.
As the first brand new entry in the franchise since 2006’s Dawn of Dreams, Way of the Sword has a storied legacy to live up to, so let’s hope Capcom is up to the task.
Marvel’s Wolverine (PS5 – September 15th)
We have to admit that we’re a little concerned by the early previews of this one, which appear to be highlighting excessive linearity and overly simplistic combat as some of its biggest flaws.
With that said, we’re still excited to step into the adamantium skeleton of one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes, and if the game offers a few hours of mindless brutality to take us out of ourselves for a while, we’ll take that.
Insomniac proudly touts Marvel’s Wolverine as a single-player action title with no open-world elements, but whether it’ll be able to sustain interest in a world of increasingly hostile competition is another matter.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (Switch 2 – September 17th)
The inaugural Fire Emblem title for the Switch 2 looks suitably ambitious; it’ll boast four playable protagonists and will be set in the same world as 2019’s breakout hit Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
This one will take place far from the monastery-centred action of that game, though, and will revolve around a competition that will see its winner granted a wish of their choosing.
Otherwise, though, you can very much expect business as usual from Fortune’s Weave, i.e. grid-based strategy gameplay with a heavy emphasis on positioning and planning.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (PC, PS5, Switch 2, Switch – September 17th)
Following on from last year’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, Nihon Falcom’s latest continues the remade saga of Estelle Bright in ways we very much don’t want to spoil.
Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed the first entry in the sub-franchise, you’ll almost certainly enjoy this one as well, especially as its story picks up exactly where the last one left off.
New fans and returning aficionados alike should find plenty to love in this reimagined adventure, so if you’re hankering after a meaty JRPG to sink your teeth into in September, this’ll be the one for you.
Control Resonant (PC, PS5, Xbox Series – September 24th)
There’s a lot riding on Control Resonant for developer and publisher Remedy; ideally, it’ll prove a runaway smash hit for the studio and will also introduce tons of neophytes to the increasingly convoluted Remedy universe.
Whatever the outcome, Control Resonant looks like it’ll be a whole lot of fun. It’s taking a new action RPG direction, so you can expect increased build variety and plenty of new toys to play with.
Story-wise, the game will see you take control of Dylan, the brother of Control protagonist Jesse, as he battles to save Manhattan from an encroaching menace.
Silent Hill: Townfall (PC, PS5 – September 24th)
The ongoing redemption of the Silent Hill franchise continues apace with Townfall, developed by the studio behind underrated 2019 curio Observation.
Set on the island of St. Amelia, Silent Hill: Townfall sees protagonist Simon exploring the now-standard labyrinth of nightmarish creatures and outlandish puzzles in search of the truth behind the fog that has now settled over the town.
It’ll be exciting to see whether Screen Burn Interactive has managed to continue the run of form that saw both Bloober Team and NeoBards deliver smash hits for the revitalised horror franchise.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered (PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 – September 29th)
In the unlikely event that you somehow have yet to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red’s upcoming remastered version promises to be the definitive way to do so.
The game will feature new, revamped visuals and reworked gameplay, and it’ll come complete with the two DLC packs currently available as well.
What better way could there be to prepare for the double whammy of 2027’s Songs of the Past expansion and 2028’s The Witcher 4 than to revisit one of the most iconic action RPGs of the 2010s?
