The Best Games for August 2025

The final month of this year’s summer is here, and with it comes Gamescom, a fairly major event in the calendar that sees many publishers and studios showing off their best work.

Of course, there are still plenty of great games to look forward to this month; there may be shadowdrops (sudden releases) during Gamescom, but you’ll have lots to keep you busy even if there aren’t.

Without further ado, then, let’s take a look at the best games coming your way in August 2025!

    Table of Contents
    1. Mafia: The Old Country (PC, PS5, Xbox Series – August 8th)
    2. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (PlayStation 5 – August 12th)
    3. Drag x Drive (Nintendo Switch 2 – August 14th)
    4. Gears of War: Reloaded (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series – August 26th)
    5. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series – August 26th)
    6. Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar (PC, Switch/2 – August 27th)
    7. Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed World (Switch 2 – August 28th)
    8. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch – August 28th)
    9. Lost Soul Aside (PC, PlayStation 5 – August 29th)

Mafia: The Old Country (PC, PS5, Xbox Series – August 8th)

    blank

First up, it’s the next entry in 2K’s Mafia series, which emphasises narrative and setpiece gameplay over exploration or open-world frippery (or at least it does now).

This latest game in the franchise will eschew the slightly empty and pointless open worlds offered by previous Mafia games, choosing instead to focus on an old-school linear series of missions.

That doesn’t mean it won’t still have plenty of juicy crime drama for you to sink your teeth into, of course, complete with plenty of sneaky stealth and frantic combat.

    Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (PlayStation 5 – August 12th)

    blank

Okay, so Xbox and Ninja Theory’s action-adventure game actually launched on PC and Xbox Series last year, but it’s getting a PS5 release this month, and we thought that was a great opportunity to spotlight it.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 continues the story of Senua, who must now sally forth into the North in order to rescue her countrymen from the aggressors who have kidnapped them.

Along the way, she’ll be dealing with the same mental health issues that plagued her (and served as her strength!) throughout the first instalment, so if you liked that one, you can expect more of the same here.

    Drag x Drive (Nintendo Switch 2 – August 14th)

    blank

Despite Nintendo’s rather strange insistence that people refer to the wheelchairs in Drag x Drive as “vehicles”, this one is still shaping up pretty well, and we’re excited to check it out.

Drag x Drive is essentially the world’s first high-profile wheelchair basketball sim; if you can imagine Rocket League, but played by robot fellows in wheelchairs rather than cars, you’re most of the way there.

The game will use Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 controls to their fullest extent, asking players to physically wheel themselves along as they would in a real wheelchair.

Gears of War: Reloaded (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series – August 26th)

    blank

The release of Gears of War: Reloaded is a momentous occasion, not only for Xbox, but also for Sony; it’s the first time the influential third-person shooter series has appeared on a Sony console.

It feels particularly appropriate for this to be the first Gears of War game to grace a Sony machine, too, as it’s essentially an expanded and enhanced re-release of 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

That means you’ll get to revisit the story that kicked off the whole franchise, complete with sharper visuals, improved performance, and a host of other enhancements.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series – August 26th)

    blank

Hideo Kojima may have left the Metal Gear series behind, but that doesn’t mean Konami is ready to do the same, as this remake (co-developed by Oblivion Remastered’s Virtuos) shows.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a ground-up rework of the classic 2004 stealth action game, and it boasts new Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals, plus retooled gameplay.

The audio, however, will remain intact from the original release, which means you’ll get to hear David Hayter’s syrupy tones as Naked Snake once again.

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar (PC, Switch/2 – August 27th)

    blank

This latest instalment in the Story of Seasons series is actually a remake of the 2008 DS title, which went under the name Harvest Moon DS: Grand Bazaar.

As the name suggests, you won’t just be farming and selling your produce in this one; you’ll be doing so via the titular bazaar, in which you’ll have to attract customers and prove your sales acumen.

Don’t worry, though; this is still very much the same sort of cosy life sim you’ve come to expect from the series, so it should still help you relax of an evening.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed World (Switch 2 – August 28th)

    blank

If you didn’t already check out Kirby and the Forgotten Land (or, indeed, if you did, and you’re looking for an excuse to go back), then this Switch 2 re-release should be on your radar.

The original Forgotten Land is a characteristically excellent Switch platformer, and the enhancements brought about by the Switch 2’s enhanced technology, as well as the extra levels, should make this a must-buy.

Star Crossed World will add more stages for you to explore, but honestly, we’d be recommending this one even if it was just a re-release of the original game.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch – August 28th)

    blank

We’re in the midst of a real revival when it comes to solid 2D hack-and-slash platformers, and that’s where the rather excellent-looking Shinobi: Art of Vengeance comes in.

Developed by Lizardcube and Seaven Studios, Sega’s reboot of its classic stylish ninja platforming series arrives across PC and consoles in late August, and it’s bound to give even the most skilled platforming fan a run for their money.

Expect gauntlets of enemies and tricky platforming challenges, as well as plenty of exploration thanks to the game’s new non-linear focus.

Lost Soul Aside (PC, PlayStation 5 – August 29th)

    blank

This hack-and-slash action RPG has been incubating for quite some time; it joined Sony’s China Hero Project, an initiative to spotlight Chinese-developed games, back in 2016.

In 2025, it seems the game is finally nearing release (although there’s always the chance of a last-minute delay), so we’ll get to see this long-awaited project in action at last.

In gameplay terms, Lost Soul Aside is promising a “gauntlet of formidable enemies and colossal bosses”, complete with spectacular combat that focuses on combos and style. If you love Devil May Cry, you’re bound to get a kick out of this.
