Why Should Remote Workers Download a VPN?

Over the past several months, many people who previously commuted to their nine-to-five jobs now find themselves working from home.

Although it comes with several perks, working remotely lacks a particular social aspect; this is why many people enjoy visiting and working from coffee shops or cafés. Doing this allows them to get their work done in a secure and social environment. If this is something you do regularly, you may want to consider downloading a VPN.

For those that don’t know, a VPN (virtual private network) privately connects users and devices to the internet

A VPN makes going online safer by using unique encryption technology that emulates the safety of traditional private networks — all without sacrificing speed, quality, or efficiency.

    Hide Your Identity Online

Whether they’re at home or the local café, most people assume that their data is safe from third parties and cybercriminals; and for the most part, they are correct. Many of the people who connect to private and public WiFi networks are able to use them safely.

However, this isn’t always the case. Every time your device connects to WiFi, there’s a chance that you’re putting important personal data at risk, such as your:

    • Search history
    • Geolocation
    • Personal identifiable information (PII)

At the click of a few buttons, cybercriminals and third parties can easily access this information and much more.

Thankfully, you can keep your data safe by using a reliable and secure VPN. VPNs allow users to mask their cyber identities by connecting to a separate, private server network. In turn, the private server’s IP address substitutes the user’s original IP address. This makes it nearly impossible for third parties or cybercriminals to identify the source of your personal data. This gives you a sense of confidence while working from home, a coffee shop, or wherever you please.

Access Servers from Around the World

If you work as a journalist or in media, you may need to access documents, articles, or other various forms of media from across the globe.

This may be simple at times; however, not all countries make it easy for outsiders to access this information. Some countries have strict digital restrictions (often referred to as geo-blocks), which stop outside users from accessing select media.

Thankfully, modern journalists (and standard users) can use a VPN to “geo-spoof” their location. Geo-spoofing gives you the ability to temporarily change or mask your IP address, allowing you to bypass certain restrictions.

As an example, if a journalist wanted to access a video from a country with a geo-block on specific content, they could use a VPN to spoof their location, allowing them to bypass the geo-block and access the media.

Best of all, there is virtually no way to trace your actions back to you. This means that you can get your work done privately from the comfort of your home or a coffee shop.

Whether you prefer to work out of your home or a café, you should consider downloading a VPN as soon as possible.
